Grants
The American Lung Association provides grant funding to researchers at all stages of their careers.
To apply, visit the Awards and Grants Program page on our national website. All applications are made through the national American Lung Association, regardless of whether the grant will be funded locally or nationally.

Independent Investigator Awards
These are offered to individual researchers, from the pre-doctoral level through mid-career.
Three Training Awards are available as part of the Lung Association's Career Ladder Program that awards grants to researchers in every stage of their career. All of these awards are available for up to two years
- Lung Health Dissertation Grant: $21,000 per year for pre-doctoral students
- Senior Research Training Fellowship: $32,500 per year for post-doctoral MDs and PhDs
- Nursing Post-Doctoral Award: $15,000 per year for nurses entering the first and second year of their post-doctoral training as scientific investigators
Three Research Grants are available in the following categories. They provide $40,000 per year for up to two years.
- Biomedical Research Grants: seed monies for studying the mechanisms of lung disease and general lung biology
- Clinical Patient Care Research Grant: funds traditional clinical studies to improve patient care and treatment for lung disease
- Social-Behavioral Research Grant: seed monies for epidemiological and behavioral studies examining risk factors that affect lung health
The Career Investigator grant, for mid-career scientists, supports career development of established independent investigators who show great promise for a national role in investigative work related to lung disease biology, traditional clinical studies related to patient care, behavioral and psycho-social matters relevant to lung disease. The grant provides $60,000 per year for up to three years.
Alliance Award Program
These grants are for post-doctorial work only. They provide opportunities to focus on targeted lung disease and health issues. All of these grants are offered by the American Lung Association in partnership with other organizations. Award duration varies.
